RE-IMAGINING A 1919 PLYMOUTH CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION “AT HOME” AFTERNOON
May 9 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm£2.50 – £5
In 1919 Plymouth Sutton became the first English constituency to elect a woman MP, Nancy Astor. That same month the first two women were elected to Plymouth Council. Astor’s election leaflet said: ‘I believe I know the real Plymouth, its children and women and its social problems…’ So did the Plymouth Citizens’ Association. What did they think should be done next? How could they work with Astor to best effect? Jo Loosemore of the BBC’s listening project hosts a ‘sofa conversation’ in which three historians discuss Plymouth’s 1919 ‘Hot Topics’.
