Statement by teacher Jo Laws:
“During a recent project, Year 1 and 2 pupils at Mayflower Community Academy explored the question, ‘What Makes a Journey?’ They delved into the artwork created by local artist, Becky Bettesworth, and were inspired by her technique and use of colour to celebrate a variety of towns in Devon and Cornwall.
This led the children to explore their favourite or special place within the local area, which ranged from The Hoe, Tinside, The Life Centre and even Asda. The children were able to clearly articulate why their chosen space was special to them, “I go to the Life Centre for swimming lessons and I like to splash my Mummy,” and “In the holidays, I swam at Tinside. The water was freezing!” were just some of the memories children shared with one another.
Now, in the lead up to Mayflower 400, the children would like to share their special places in the community with you, hoping to inspire you to explore and enjoy your favourite locations within Plymouth and beyond.”
