A new self-guided audio tour has been launch today by Devonport Guildhall and Column, enabling customers to tune in and learn all about the history of the Guildhall and Column.
The free audio tour has been created by RIO – custodians of Devonport Guildhall – working with The Media Workshop, Plymouth City Museum and local historian Chris Robinson, and provides a fascinating insight into the former uses of the Guildhall and Column as well as historical information about the local area.
Louise Evans, Devonport Guildhall Manager said: “People often visit here wanting to know more about the history of the place and how Devonport came to have such impressive buildings. We are often busy with events in the building, so an audio tour seemed like the perfect way to share the story of the Guildhall with as many people as possible.
“We’re really excited to launch this new addition to the visitor offer at Devonport Guildhall and Column and hope people will get a feel of the rich history of these two important Plymouth landmarks.”
There are two elements to the audio tour – an indoor and an outdoor section – each lasting 30 minutes. The tour is free for all visitors to access, simply follow this link or use your smartphone or tablet to scan the QR code on the signage in the building to access it on arrival.
Visitors are recommended to bring their own headphones, but for those without, headphones are available from Column Bakehouse inside of Devonport Guildhall, for £1 a pair.
The audio tour was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund – supporting projects that make a lasting difference for heritage, people and communities.
Devonport Guildhall is a popular events venue so visitors are recommended to call in advance to ensure all the rooms they want to see are available for viewing before setting out.
